Only recently taking over the management of Caberfeidh (September 2017) has been an opportunity for me to learn just what Headwaters ewes and their offspring are capable of, without too many preconceived notions.
I’ve had experience with various composite breeds in the North Island as well as with Romneys. My initial sense is that with Headwaters Caberfeidh has the best of characteristics of a traditional breed with important additional benefits, especially growth and fertility. I’ve been especially impressed by the ewes’ ability to bounce back after a very wet winter, and the growth rates of their lambs.
For me it’s early days, but joining a team on Caberfeidh that’s well versed in getting the best out of the ewes, along with the wider TE MANA LAMB opportunity, is pretty exciting.
