New Headwaters appointment underlines consumer focus
Headwaters has appointed Simon Langley to the new position of livestock manager – a further step in linking genetic development, farming practices and consumer preferences.
Previously the producer group manager for ANZCO Foods and with four years as the feedlot operations manager for Five Star Beef, Simon comes with a strong track record in helping link on-farm decision making with market needs.
“There are plenty of dots between farmer and consumer and my passion is in helping join them,” Simon says.
Recent examples of this include managing the integrity and delivery of ANZCO’s Waitrose Lamb and Aleph grass-fed beef programme requirements into the UK and Japan respectively.
The timing of the appointment also reflects the commercialisation of the Omega Lamb Project Primary Growth Partnership, in which Headwaters is a shareholder with Alliance Group and the Ministry for Primary Industries.
Another aspect of his role will be helping ensure the growth of Headwaters is targeted in terms of geography, farm type, farm management and farmer philosophy.
“Scale is not an end in itself – it’s the pathway to scale that’s most important. Who we would want to join the Headwaters team, for what reason, and for what mutual benefit are all important questions.”
Headwaters general manager Ian Hercus said Simon’s experience and approach were a natural fit for the Headwaters-of-the-future.
“Ten years into our journey we’re more focused than ever on developing our genetics and helping farmers manage their stock with the consumer in mind. Simon has a key role to play in this.”
